George Whiteside, an award-winning artist and photographer, is renowned for his success in fashion, editorial, and advertising. Yet, he often surprises people by introducing himself as an artist. His artistic journey began when a stormy wind blew away his drawings at six, sparking his passion for art. Born into a vibrant, creative family, George was inspired by his amateur photographer grandfather. His family’s love for home movies and photos fueled his passion for the visual arts. At the Ontario College of Art and Design, George developed a unique mixed-media film style, a blend of traditional and digital techniques, which earned him the top photography award despite being outside the photography department, stirring envy among his peers. He continued to hone his skills under the guidance of instructors like Barbara Astman.

A pivotal moment in George’s career occurred when he used Canada’s first colour, Xerox, marking the intersection of art and technology. His fascination with the machine led him to become a key figure at Visual Arts Ontario, where he taught classes and became a resource for local artists. He also co-founded the YYZ Gallery in Toronto, a platform showcasing fine art and photography, and curated many exhibitions. His curatorial work and photography earned him acclaim in the Canadian art scene and contributed significantly to its growth and recognition. George’s unparalleled success is a testament to his talent and dedication, inspiring and instilling pride in the Canadian art community.

George’s artistic journey is a testament to his unique style and approach. His photography career, which began with Toronto Life and Fashion, shooting portraits and a fashion editorial that won a National Magazine Award, catapulted him into the upper echelons of Canadian commercial photography. Today, George’s use of digital techniques to manipulate photos is not just a technical skill but a reflection of his quirky style and love for odd textures. His ability to create something unique while remaining true to his artistic roots is a source of intrigue for art enthusiasts. His digital manipulation techniques allow him to transform ordinary images into extraordinary works of art, adding a new dimension to his already impressive portfolio.
